Weather Synopsis

The radar this afternoon shows showers peppering the west slopes of the Cascades, with the heaviest precipitation near Mt St Helens, Mt Adams, and Mt Hood. This pattern will continue into the early evening. If you find yourself under one of these showers, you could see half an inch or more of snow quickly accumulate. A transient high-pressure ridge will move across the area overnight and put an end to any lingering precipitation. For most locations skies will clear, temperatures should drop, and low clouds/fog may form. By Wednesday morning, the fast-moving high-pressure is already exiting to the east and our next storm begins to approach the coast. Clouds will spread across the region from the SW to NE, thicken, and lower during the day. An initial precipitation shield associated with the storm's warm front will follow a similar track, arriving for locations in the south Cascades around mid-morning and near Mt Baker and Washington Pass by late-afternoon. This will create generally strong and gusty winds for many sites, including the mountain passes. Due to the south-southeastern flow associated with this low-pressure, areas near and east of the Cascade Crest could ring out a bit more rain and snow than normal, given this rather modest storm.

Precipitation will continue Wednesday night and into early Thursday as the low-pressure system stalls off the coast. A secondary surface low should make its way across the Pacific Northwest Thursday with colder air and another round of showers. The position and track of this weak feature could make a huge difference in how much rain and snow the mountains receive. At the moment, we expect this disturbance to travel just off the coastline, however, if it makes its way further inland, the mountains could see more significant rain and snow.

Extended Weather Synopsis

Showers should linger into Thursday night and even Friday as the trough deepens overhead. An unstable atmosphere and day time warming could create plenty of convective showers Friday afternoon before a building high-pressure ridge forces any leftover moisture out of the area. Once this ridge starts to take hold, we should begin a very gradual warming trend Friday and Satruday.

Previous forecast from Apr 18, 2022

The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.

The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.

The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.

*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.

Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.

The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.

Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.

Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).

The label LT, is shorthand for ‘less than’.
