A surface low tracking north of Vancouver Island ushers a north-south oriented front into the Pacific Northwest region. As of Monday afternoon, the front has reached the Olympic mountains, bringing moderate to heavy rain and snow and rising to places like Hurricane Ridge and Mt. Baker. The front should traverse the Cascades during the early evening hours with a period of moderate rain and snow. Southerly winds aloft ahead of the front have brought rising temperatures across the region. Easterly flow in advance of the front doesn't cool the passes much this time of year, snow levels will hover around 3500 ft. Behind the front, expect a transition to decreasing and increasingly showery precipitation, but strongly cooling temperatures should return snow to Snoqualmie Pass level by around midnight and boost snow/water ratios. WSW and W winds should produce convergence that enhances the Mt. Baker area. We expect the highest storm totals in these areas. Snow levels drop to around 2000 ft by Tuesday morning, rising to 2500-3000 ft in the afternoon.
Showers should rotate around a cool upper trough on Tuesday bringing several inches of snow and locally intense graupel showers to the west slopes of the Cascades while the east slopes might pick up a trace to 1". Shower activity dwindles during the early evening. Expect Partial clearing overnight as a short wave ridge traverses the region Wednesday morning. High clouds ahead of the next system should increase and lower with light rain and snow arriving on SSW flow to Mt. Hood by late Wednesday morning and to other areas during the afternoon. Snow levels should rise once again to 3500-4000 ft.

Extended Weather Synopsis
A deep, cool upper trough should maintain semi-organized bands of showers Wednesday night and Thursday. The trough digs south into California Thursday night and Friday, but temperatures aloft will be plenty cool for afternoon instability rain/snow showers.
The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.
The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.
The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.
*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.
Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.
The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.
Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.
Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).
