Weather Synopsis

Our old friend, a cold upper trough remains parked off the Washington coast, delivering well below normal temperatures and snow showers to the region.  An associated upper level circulation passed into eastern WA last night and this morning, delivering another shot of snow to the east slopes of the Cascades, especially the Wenatchee/Blewett area. That feature has passed to the east this afternoon, and convective showers over the mountains are generally slow movers, with their motion depending where they are relative to the upper low. Graupel should be expected with any heavier showers.

Shower activity should diminish overnight with another cold overnight. Widespread lows in the 20s and teens are expected across the mountains. Showers coverage intensity and coverage will increase again on Friday afternoon with daytime heating and a cold unstable air mass overhead. Showers may be slightly less intense down near Mt Hood, they remain on the southern periphery of the low.  The Olympics and Washington Cascades will have the colder, more unstable air aloft over them and an odd lightning strike can't be ruled out. Showers should have a slow SE to NW drift.

We'll see weak upper level ridging build over the Rockies on Friday night and Saturday, orienting the flow aloft over the region to SW as the low remains parked offshore. An upper level feature associated with the low will pass inland Saturday afternoon with cold snow showers expected once again, although many details are still up in the air. Whenever this feature passes inland, expect a switch from S or E winds to strong westerly.  Mt Hood may see more moderate precipitation on Saturday as a developing frontal system passes inland from the California coast.

Extended Weather Synopsis

Sunday we should have an upper level ridge, dry weather and slightly warmer (4000-5000') freezing levels over the area.  Don't get too excited thinking of an extended stretch of dry weather. A developing frontal system offshore will approach the coast Sunday night and push inland on Monday. This should open the door to a more active period through midweek.

Previous forecast from Apr 13, 2022

The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.

The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.

The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.

*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.

Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.

The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.

Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.

Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).

The label LT, is shorthand for ‘less than’.
