Weather Synopsis

The cold, unsettled weather will continue through Monday with winter-like temperatures and snow showers across our mountains as a cold upper level trough settles over the PNW. A Puget Sound Convergence Zone that's currently taking shape early this afternoon between the Hwy 2 and I-90 West corridors will likely stack up the most snowfall through the evening with light to moderate showers continuing elsewhere for Mt Hood, the Olympics and near and west of the Cascade crest.

A weak low pressure system moving inland tonight will spread light snow over the area, with a focus on the southwest Cascades and Mt Hood where more moderate amounts are forecast. Mt Hood, St Helens and Mt Rainier may pick up an additional 8-12 inches through Sunday morning. Strong westerly ridgeline winds will begin to peel back for areas north of Hwy 2 tonight as the new low approaches overnight. For areas further south, moderate to strong west winds will continue and actually increase for Mt. Hood where they are already in the strong to extreme range. Over Washington State, snow levels will hover near or just above sea level tonight.

Showers should lighten Sunday morning, but with very cold air aloft, convective showers will fire right back up during Sunday afternoon. In this pattern, the odd lightning strike can't be ruled out, and you should expect to find graupel at times during heavier showers.

A more significant low pressure system will take aim at the region Sunday night and Monday. Forecast models are in somewhat better agreement that the developing low will track further south of Gray's Harbor, pushing inland somewhere along the Oregon coast early Monday morning. This could be another significant April snowstorm for the Mt Hood area, and perhaps the south Washington Cascades. Strong easterly winds should also wreak havoc for much of the area north of the low pressure's track. Upslope flow, may enhance snowfall along the east slopes of the Cascades from the Wentachees (Mission Ridge area) and south. There's a lot to keep tabs on with this dynamic pattern, so check back for updates.

Extended Weather Synopsis

As the aforementioned low-pressure system passes inland Monday night, another upper low will dumbell off the coast Tue/Wed, keeping that cold trough firmly entrenched over the PNW. The details are near impossible to sort out, but we can expect below normal temperatures to continue and the persistent threat of snow showers in the mountains. In this pattern, the Olympics and Mt. Hood area may be the snowfall winners during the middle of the week.

Previous forecast from Apr 8, 2022

The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.

The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.

The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.

*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.

Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.

The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.

Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.

Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).

The label LT, is shorthand for ‘less than’.
