Weather Synopsis

The storm continues in the mountains this afternoon. So far, most sites have received 1-2+ ft of snow and counting, along with very gusty winds. At this point, the precipitation has turned more showery, but given its convective spring-like nature, this can mean periods of intense snowfall. Expect this pattern to continue overnight. A strong westerly Jet Stream remains aimed at the Pacific Northwest. This will maintain generally strong and gusty winds, especially for locations near and east of the Cascades Crest and Mt Hood. A subtle pulse of moisture being pushed by the jet should reinvigorate showers overnight and lead to yet another period of significant snow accumulation. Basically, Monday night will continue to be stormy.

The pattern slowly starts to change on Tuesday. For most locations, the morning should start with snow showers. However, a high-pressure ridge will begin to build over the region and bring an end to the precipitation. The weather models continue to significantly disagree about exactly when that will occur. The longer the upper airflow stays westerly, the longer the low-level moisture can ring out more snow along the west slopes of the Cascades. As the winds turn more northwesterly, we should start to dry out. A lingering Puget Sound Convergence Zone could maintain a narrow band of precipitation into the afternoon. Away from these showers, the mountains should see significant sun breaks. This will be most likely for locations further east and south in the forecast area. By Tuesday night, the entire region should start to dry out and skies to clear.

After a chilly start Wednesday morning, the mountains (and the snowpack) are in for a bit of whiplash. By mid-morning, the high-pressure ridge takes full control of our weather and floods the region with much warmer air. Long days, a strong April sun, and higher temperatures will send freezing levels soaring. This will be a very big change for the snowpack.

Extended Weather Synopsis

Temperatures continue to climb as we go into the long-range forecast. While mostly clear skies Wednesday night might allow for a bit of cooling and temperatures inversions, as the sun comes out, freezing levels will continue their steady climb. They should top out around 10,000-11,500 for most locations Thursday afternoon. With the high-pressure ridge pushing further and further east, our upper airflow should turn more southwesterly and allow high clouds to push into the area. A system and approaching trough appear to clip the Cascades with most of the storm heading north into Canada. While snow levels should lower ahead of the precipitation, right now, it appears like rain at lower elevations with snow higher in the mountains.

Previous forecast from Apr 4, 2022

The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.

The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.

The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.

*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.

Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.

The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.

Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.

Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).

The label LT, is shorthand for ‘less than’.
