Weather Synopsis

A major winter storm is knocking at our door this afternoon. The weather will deteriorate rapidly over the evening hours. Expect extremely stormy conditions with very strong and gusty winds, heavy precipitation, and fluctuating snow levels through at least Monday night. A strong jet stream and associated low-pressure system will take aim at the Pacific Northwest Sunday evening. First up, a warm front will push over the mountains causing southerly winds to increase significantly and moderate to heavy rain and snow. This first round of precipitation will favor sites near the volcanoes. However, when combined with the strength of the overhead jet stream, showers should push into all locations, even east of the crest. Overnight, snow levels will sit near or just above Stevens and White Passes, and fluctuating temperatures may cause the rain-snow line to yo-yo.

The trailing cold front will bear down on our region Monday morning. This will maintain heavy precipitation and very strong and gusty westerly winds. Temperatures will quickly drop over the morning hours, with snow eventually reaching below all Pass levels. With plenty of moisture in place and a very strong zonal jet stream, just because the cold front has passed doesn't mean the action is over. Windy conditions should persist throughout the day with very strong to extreme alpine wind speeds. Similarly, moderate to occasionally heavy post-frontal showers will start to pile up snow in the mountains. Most locations could easily see 1-2 ft of snow, with locations near Mt Baker or Mt Rainier seeing 3 or more feet of accumulation by the storm's end.

Showers should continue Monday night for most locations especially near and west of the Cascade crest. A high-pressure ridge will start to build into the area Tuesday morning and try to put an end to what's left of the snow showers. Weather models disagree about when the bulk of the precipitation will draw to a close, and small changes in timing could make a big difference. Either way, by Tuesday afternoon, you should see drier weather and maybe even a few sun breaks.

Extended Weather Synopsis

Our weather pattern is in for a big change as we head into the long-range forecast. This kind of dynamic spring-like weather can give us (and the snowpack) a bit of whiplash. After a cold and partly clear night Tuesday, the building high-pressure ridge will take full control of our weather. Warmer air should start to flood into the Pacific Northwest Wednesday and send our freezing levels skyrocketing. Fueled by the strong April sun and longer days, we could see an increase of 9-10,000' in a span of only 48 hrs. So, we'll go from a very strong winter storm, back to warm and dry spring-like weather in just a blink of an eye.

Previous forecast from Apr 3, 2022

The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.

The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.

The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.

*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.

Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.

The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.

Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.

Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).

The label LT, is shorthand for ‘less than’.
