Forecast updated 3:06 PM for clarifications to the second paragraph.
A few isolated rain/snow showers should end along the west slopes of the Cascades as high pressure moves into the region Thursday night. Enough low-level moisture lingers to maintain scattered clouds overnight. Temperatures drop into the 20s in mountain locations across the region.
Clouds increase throughout the region on Friday as an upper trough and associated front approach the region. Temperatures warm in advance of the front, yielding a mild afternoon. Some light rain or snow will likely develop by the end of the day for Mt. Baker and the western slopes of the Olympic Mountains.
Light rain and snow spread throughout the region Friday evening and intensify along the west slopes of the Cascades overnight. A cooling trend lowers snow levels from 3000-4000 ft Friday evening to 2500-3500 ft as snow showers taper off throughout the day on Saturday. This appears to be a 3-6" snowstorm for the west slopes of the Cascades above 4000 ft with slightly more possible where convergence bands stall. The convergence likely develops over Snohomish county early Saturday morning and shifts southward towards Stevens and Snoqualmie Passes during the day. Potentially strong W ridgeline winds may develop along the east slopes of the Cascades and through the mountain gaps late Friday night and early Saturday, then gradually easing during the afternoon.

Extended Weather Synopsis
Saturday night, a few showers may linger in the evening, but the real action starts as a frontal boundary moves into northwestern Washington late Sunday and stalls over the region. Rain and snow intensify as a stronger frontal system reinforces the action Sunday night with intensifying WSW winds and heavy rain/snow. Winds turn westerly on Monday as heavy snowfall continues across the region. Snow levels start around 4000 ft and gradually lower. Above the rain/snow line, we expect 1-1.5 ft (and locally 2 ft) of snowfall by the end of the day Monday near and west of the Cascade Crest. Expect locations on the east slopes to get up to 1 foot of snow. The end result will be a major late-season storm that finally eases on Tuesday.
The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.
The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.
The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.
*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.
Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.
The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.
Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.
Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).
