Weather Synopsis

A frontal system dropping south through central Washington this afternoon will be followed by a cold upper level trough that will produce snow over the next few days and bring falling temperatures to the region.  Precipitation will continue to spread south this afternoon and evening. Strong west winds ahead and behind the front will maintain orographic showers along the west slopes of the Cascades with a specific focus on the central Cascades tonight. The Mountain Loop highway and Stevens Pass area will take the brunt of the heavy snowfall tonight and the heaviest band will shift toward Snoqualmie Pass, likely around daybreak. While snow showers become scattered over the north Cascades Sunday afternoon, snow showers will continue to pile up snow for the central/south Cascades and Mt. Hood. The strong westerly winds will carry those heavier snow showers over the crest for areas downwind of the convergence zone(s).  Storm totals of 8-24" of snow are likely along the west slopes of the Cascades and Mt Hood through Sunday afternoon.

The pattern will continue Sunday night with a weak surface low off the coast of WA/OR directly continuous snow showers towards the southwest Cascades and Mt. Hood. On Monday, things get interesting as Fraser outflow begins to carry modified arctic air out of the interior. There will be convective showers over the mountains, especially down at Mt. Hood, and we can expect a few more inches of fluffy snow.  East winds look to ramp up later Monday into Monday night.

Extended Weather Synopsis

We'll slowly dry out with very cold temperatures for all areas expected Tuesday. Drier conditions will be found in the north with light snow showers possible for the central/south Cascades and Mt. Hood on Tuesday.  A strong ridge offshore begins to shift toward our region on Wednesday.  Mountain temperatures will be in the teens and even single digits over this stretch.

Previous forecast from Feb 19, 2022

The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.

The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.

The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.

*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.

Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.

The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.

Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.

Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).

The label LT, is shorthand for ‘less than’.
