Temperatures continue to climb in the mountains as a strong high-pressure ridge remains stubbornly in place over the Pacific Northwest. We're now several days into the longest stretch of warm sunny weather of the spring and this pattern isn't going anywhere any time soon. You will see slightly higher temperatures each night and day until the warmup peaks over the weekend. This afternoon, many of the mountain weather stations show readings in the upper 40's or even low 50's! While some valleys and passes may form weak inversions overnight, air temperatures will remain well above freezing. On Friday, you could encounter temperatures reaching near 60 degrees at some trailhead locations. This constant incremental increase in temperature should continue into Saturday with the mountains experiencing the warmest weather since last fall.
Strong easterly winds continue to impact locations near Mission Ridge, Crystal Mt, White Pass, and Mt Hood. Expect this pattern to continue until at least Friday night. While you may experience slight ebbs and flows in the wind speeds, don't look for much to change in these same locations. Strong and gusty easterly winds will maintain slightly cooler (but still very warm) temperatures for the southern half of the region. Further north and west, much calmer winds will allow you to feel the full brunt of the hot weather.
These trends will stay with us as we head into a very warm and sunny weekend.

Extended Weather Synopsis
This extended period of warm and sunny weather should peak sometime late Satruday night or Sunday. Freezing levels will top out between 10 and 11 thousand feet. However, this only tells a small part of the story. Lower elevation temperatures will continue to rise with overnight lows likely remaining in the 40's and daytime highs reaching into the 60's. By Sunday, an approaching through will nudge up against the high-pressure and push it ever so slightly east. As it does so, more northerly flow should return slightly milder weather to the region on Monday and bring the possibility for a few scattered clouds in the sky.
The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.
The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.
The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.
*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.
Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.
The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.
Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.
Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).
