Weather Synopsis

An unusual track for a low pressure system brought heavy precipitation (almost 2" WE in 12 hrs) for the Olympics and north Cascades today along with rising snow levels. As the low tracked NE across the Strait of Juan de Fuca to the north Cascades so did the warm air, with rain pushing up to around 5000' for the northwest Cascades and above Hurricane Ridge. The Washington Pass - Methow Valley corridor picked up a quick 10-12" as colder air remained entrenched further east. The more northerly orientation of the axis of heaviest precipitation gave the central, south Washington Cascades and Mt Hood areas a mid-day respite from heavier precipitation in the mild and very windy warm sector.

The warmth and localized break in the precipitation is coming to an end as the radar fills in with a menacing shield of precipitation slowly tracking eastward. The front will pass through the Cascades around 4 pm with a rapid cool down this evening. Rain will change to snow through the early afternoon and evening hours. The Washington Pass and east-central Cascades will see snow levels peak around 5500' and 6500' early this evening respectively before cooling.

After the frontal passage, strong W-NW winds will wring out moisture along the central and south Washington Cascades and Mt Hood tonight with drier and less windy conditions for the north Cascades.  A convergence zone in between Stevens and Snoqualmie Pass will likely produce heavier snowfall totals there. Look for snow levels to fall to at least 1000' after midnight as colder air filters into the region. Scattered showers may last until the morning for Stevens and Snoqualmie Passes, but strong upper-level ridging will quickly build offshore. Look for a sunnier forecast on the east slopes of the Cascades and the Olympics tomorrow. Trapped stratocumulus clouds along the west slopes of the Cascades and Mt Hood will make for a mixed bag of afternoon cloud cover on Tuesday.

High pressure and dry conditions will stay with us through Wednesday. Freezing levels will start to climb for areas west of the Cascade Crest. Expect temperature inversions and increasing east winds in the Cascade Passes during the day Wednesday.

Extended Weather Synopsis

High pressure and moderate offshore flow (east winds through the Passes) will continue Wednesday night through Thursday night.  Thursday should be the warmest day for most areas at mid and upper elevations but watch for temperature inversions and low clouds getting pulled through the Passes. A weakening frontal system will slow down as it reaches the area on Christmas Day.

Previous forecast from Dec 21, 2020

The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.

The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.

The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.

*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.

Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.

The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.

Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.

Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).

The label LT, is shorthand for ‘less than’.
