Weather Synopsis for Monday night through Saturday

There's a mixed bag of cloud cover and visibility out there as an upper-level trough exits our region and an upper-level ridge moves overhead. On satellite (and web cams) you see the upper portions of volcanoes reaching into the drier air aloft. A few scattered showers remain along the west slopes of the Cascades and Mt. Hood but otherwise, a drying and partial clearing trend should continue through Tuesday morning.

A weak Pacific frontal system should reach the Washington/Oregon coast by late Tuesday afternoon potentially bringing very light rain and snow to the Olympics. After a partly to mostly sunny start to the day for many Cascade locations, this system will spread clouds inland during the afternoon with cloud ceilings lowering late in the day. The associated upper-level trough digs off the California coast Tuesday night and as it does, the frontal band positioned along the coast will weaken significantly as it pushes inland.

Little to no moisture is expected Tuesday night and Wednesday from this weak system but skies will likely remain overcast. Snow/freezing levels will remain on the cool side during this period and no significant winds are expected.

Extended Weather Synopsis for Saturday night through Saturday

A stronger upper level ridge will move over the area Wednesday night and Thursday for continued fair weather. The ridge will begin to break down as a frontal system approaches the area in NW flow aloft. By splitting the difference between the main operational weather models, light precipitation may spread into the Olympics and the north Cascades Thursday night and Friday before the upper-level ridge rebuilds and shunts precipitation to our north. While the long range forecast does not look completely dry, it's hard to pick out the next big storm with any confidence in the next 7 days.
