Weather Synopsis for Saturday night through Friday

A broad upper level low in the NE Pacific will direct a winter-like strength jet stream into the Pacific Northwest over the next few days. Just as post-frontal showers wind down this evening another frontal system developing along the jet will rapidly spread precipitation into Oregon this evening and most of Washington by early Sunday morning. Forecast models are in good agreement that Mt. Hood will bear the brunt of this storm in terms of precipitation, warming, and winds. Less certainty surrounds how much significant precipitation will push north into the south and central Washington Cascades through Sunday morning. The Olympics and the north Cascades should receive only light accumulations.

After the low weakens and traverses the Columbia River Gorge Sunday morning, isolated showers and along with a warming trend should ensue for the Washington Cascades. Yet another low pressure system developing along the quasi-stationary frontal boundary will begin to spread warm frontal moisture into the Mt. Hood area Sunday afternoon. So perhaps there will be a mid-day lull for Mt. Hood but generally moderate and steady precipitation is expected through Sunday.

Poor forecast confidence extends to Sunday night and Monday. The GFS takes the low pressure northeast and quickly inland Sunday night with leftover showers for Monday while other models curl the low along the coast Sunday night extending the stormier patter for another 12 hours.

Extended Weather Synopsis for Friday night through Friday

Tuesday should be a break day from significant precipitation with some leftover showers. Broad upper level ridging building well offshore near 150W will allow systems to reach the Pacific Northwest in cooler NW flow aloft. A fast moving but potentially cooler weather system will likely impact the area on Wednesday.
