Weather Synopsis

The low pressure system that brought active weather mid-week continues to move eastward and transits southern Alberta as of Friday afternoon. In its wake, our region remains with moderate low-level onshore flow, and cold air aloft arriving on NW flow as an offshore ridge gradually expands into our region. 5000 ft temperatures are unseasonably cold, topping out in the mid-20s to low 30s across the region. There's enough low-level moisture and low-level instability beneath the incoming ridge to keep isolated snow showers and weak convergence going at times, but only a few snow flurries are even reaching the Cascade Crest or points east.

This pattern continues overnight as the ridge gradually replaces the outgoing trough. The west slopes of Mt Hood, Snoqualmie to Stevens Pass, or areas west of Mt Baker might pick up a trace of new snow as skies mostly cloudy skies gradually become partly cloudy. Further east, expect clearing skies and strong radiational cooling.

After a chilly start to the day on Friday, expect quickly rebounding temperatures topping out 10-15F warmer than Thursday thanks to a modest ridge of high pressure moving onshore bringing mostly sunny skies. Expect a few popcorn cumulus clouds to build in the afternoon, particularly for areas north of Mt Rainier. Wispy high clouds might also move in late in the day. Variable, but slightly NNW ridgeline winds at the start of the day generally switch more southerly as the day progresses.

Friday night through Saturday, a closed low positions itself well offshore, increasing southerly winds over our region. Some moderate wind gusts might be expected for the Olympics and Mt Baker areas by Saturday afternoon as freezing levels rise to 7000 to 9000 ft. High clouds thicken, particularly over western portions of the forecast region.

Extended Weather Synopsis

The closed low offshore likely drifts southward Saturday night through Monday. The best chances for any light shower activity reaching our region is on Saturday night for the Olympics, but at this time it looks like some cloud cover and enhanced S to SE winds will be the primary impacts. By Sunday, high clouds will be retreating southward, leaving clear/sunny skies and above average temperatures into early next week.

Previous forecast from Apr 16, 2026

The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.

The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.

The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.

*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.

Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.

The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.

Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.

Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).

The label LT, is shorthand for ‘less than’.
