Weather Synopsis

It's been a fairly calm night across the Cascades, with some continued light showers along the west side and in the mountain passes. Temperatures have cooled, with snow levels hovering near 3000-3,500 feet. Winds are generally light ahead of the impending system.

Tuesday will be a busy day in terms of weather for the Cascades. Today, a low-pressure system will move south over British Columbia, delivering a strong stream of moisture to the region. Strengthening southwesterly flow will bring precipitation first to the Olympics and the West North zones this morning. Moisture will gradually spread south, reaching Mt Hood midday, and eventually providing moderate spillover east of the crest. During the daytime hours, the greatest precipitation intensity will be focused on the westerly zones north of I-90. Overnight, intensity will shift to the southern volcanoes and into the mountain passes.

Snow levels will hover near or above the mountain passes through the day on Tuesday, with a quick drop overnight, reaching as low as 1000 feet in some areas. The east side of the Cascades will be slower to cool with this system, so expect a delay in the snowfall compared to everywhere else. As snow levels drop, expect an increase in snowfall intensity across the Cascades.

Winds will ramp up quickly with the arrival of the system, forming a barrier jet along the west slopes. Most ridgelines will see strong wind speeds through the day, with extreme speeds possible on the volcanoes, and especially Mt Hood. Winds will ease gradually overnight, as the flow direction shifts more westerly.

Snow showers will continue on Wednesday as the low center moves over Washington. Cool air in place will maintain relatively low snow levels. That being said, it's springtime, and it doesn't take much for temperatures to climb during the day. Unstable air aloft may allow for some isolated thunderstorms around the Olympics in the afternoon.

Previous forecast from Apr 13, 2026

The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.

The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.

The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.

*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.

Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.

The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.

Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.

Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).

The label LT, is shorthand for ‘less than’.
