Weather Synopsis

If you're enjoying the warm sunny weather, you're in luck! We have more on tap for Sunday. A high pressure ridge has taken up residence over the Pacific Northwest and will continue to bring us mostly clear skies, generally light winds, and warm temperatures through the rest of the weekend and into the start of the work week.

High thin clouds persist Saturday night. While they may slightly curtail overnight cooling, it shouldn't be enough to fully stop it. So, low temperatures will dip, but likely stay above freezing. Weak inversions could form in some of the mountain valleys and passes, with the coldest (but likely still above freezing) temperatures occurring at these lower elevations.

If you're off to hunt Easter Eggs in the snow on Sunday, it looks like yet another gorgeous spring day! Once again, high thin clouds may keep it from being fully bluebird, but the sunshine and warm temperatures will certainly make themselves known. Five thousand ft temperatures should easily reach into the 50s for nearly the entire forecast region. Some sites may even flirt with 60 F by the afternoon. Look for light to moderate SE winds to become more noticeable in places near the Cascade crest from I-90 southward to Mt Hood. These offshore (east) winds should bring the warmest temperatures to locations west of the spine of the range, like Mt Saint Helens, Mt Rainier, and Mt Baker.

A low pressure system passing well to our north in British Columbia will cause the high pressure ridge to bend but not break Sunday night and into Monday. The biggest changes to the weather will come from increasing upper elevation winds and a better chance for partly cloudy skies. Precipitation from this storm should generally stay north of the border, and any sprinkles would likely hold off until Monday night or Tuesday.

Extended Weather Synopsis

A low pressure system pushes southward against our blocking high pressure ridge Monday night into Tuesday. While increasing clouds, stronger winds, and cooler temperatures seem like a given, whether or not we see any precipitation is much less certain. Some locations in the WA Cascades could see a few sprinkles Monday night into Tuesday morning. Even if it does rain and snow, accumulations should be minimal. As the system exists to the east, the PNW sits on the downstream side of a building high pressure ridge, providing dry but much cooler conditions than we saw over the weekend. Right now, it appears the ridge very slowly shifts east throughout the week, providing a gradual warming trend.

Previous forecast from Apr 4, 2026

The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.

The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.

The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.

*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.

Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.

The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.

Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.

Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).

The label LT, is shorthand for ‘less than’.
