Weather Synopsis

We will continue to see variable cloud cover across the region this evening, with a mix of high clouds at times for all areas, and additional low clouds near and along the west slopes of the Cascades near and north of I-90 and the Olympics. An approaching cool upper trough over the Gulf of Alaska will spin an upper level front into our area on Sunday. Look for organized showers moving inland for the Olympics and northwest Cascades in the morning, but showers will be slow to progress further inland, waiting into the mid afternoon for convective showers to roll in.

The overall pattern is a slow cooling through Sunday. Once the afternoon showers start, snow levels will drop to 2500-4000' across the mountains, with the lowest snow levels over the Olympics and northwest Cascades. Winds will also spike during the day on Sunday, first out of the SW, and then more westerly later in the day.

A period of light to moderate snow showers and blustery west winds should take us from the late afternoon through Sunday evening, at which point the shower coverage will become more focused near a Puget Sound Convergence zone.  Models are being fairly shy with water/snowfall totals, but expect an additional few inches of snow between the Mt Loop Hwy, Stevens and Snoqualmie.  Snoquamlie may end up with the highest totals by Monday morning.  With the trough moving into eastern WA overnight, cold air will be ushered in and snow levels will briefly fall to near sea-level, with mountain temperatures in the teens and low 20s.

Showers should wind down quickly on Monday. Clouds should break up along the east slopes Monday, but low clouds will be stick around. Freezing levels will rebound in the afternoon but will still be cool for late March.

Extended Weather Synopsis

Tuesday will be a break day between systems with a slow warming trend from Monday's cool start to the week.  A more significant system will arrive late Tuesday night or more likely on Wednesday, bringing rain and snow to the mountains.  There's still quite a bit of uncertainty about just how much snow this system will bring.

Previous forecast from Mar 28, 2026

The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.

The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.

The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.

*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.

Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.

The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.

Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.

Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).

The label LT, is shorthand for ‘less than’.
