Weather Synopsis

530pm Update: Adjusted Washington Pass precipitation forecast Wednesday night.

An atmospheric river (AR) continues to deliver copious amounts of rain to the western slopes of the Cascades, specifically near and north of I-90.  The firehouse won't shift much over the next 48 hrs, with Snoqualmie Pass on the periphery of the higher precipitation numbers, and higher confidence of wetter conditions further north of I-90 and drier conditions south of Highway 12.  This isn't as juicy as we've seen with atmospheric rivers, so the conveyor belt of moisture won't push as much moisture over the crest and into the eastern slopes of the Cascades in the latest multi-day AR iteration. Where is it the wettest? The West North and West Central zones will likely pick up 1-2" of water every 12 hours through Friday.

Even if you're not getting drenched, westerly winds will be persistent, strong, and occasionally extreme, especially at upper elevations and in the alpine.

Snow levels will hover between 7500'-9000' over the WA Cascades and 11,000' near Mt Hood, where sunnier conditions will persist.  Look for snow levels to dip slightly late tonight and Thursday, and we should start to see some wet snow mixing in at upper elevations for the north Cascades.

More of the same can be expected Thursday night before the frontal boundary slowly sags south on Friday. Stormy conditions are likely over the Washington Cascades.  Unfotunately, the timing looks such that this will be a rain event and the cooling will hold off until Friday night and Saturday.

Extended Weather Synopsis

Behind the front Friday night, colder air will filter in from the NW.  While snow levels will drop, it doesn't look like there will be significant post-frontal snow shower activity, likely a few inches Friday night into Saturday morning along the west slopes of the Cascades. Mt Hood doesn't cool as much and will likely see less precipitation overall.

We'll transition to zonal flow for the weekend, with some clouds and a chance of light rain or snow closer to the Canadian border, with milder temperatures and fewer clouds further south.

Previous forecast from Mar 18, 2026

The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.

The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.

The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.

*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.

Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.

The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.

Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.

Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).

The label LT, is shorthand for ‘less than’.
