Weather Synopsis

The Pacific Northwest sits on the backside of a broad upper trough that stretches across most of the contiguous US and Canada.  This pattern won't change much through Friday morning and either will the weather.

Weak upper level disturbances and orographics will help squeeze out snow showers along the west slopes of the Cascades near and north of I-90, with a few inches of light snow possible every 12 hrs. Further south of I-90 and along the west slopes, low clouds will be present with the occasional light shower. The low clouds will squeeze through mountain gaps and push east of the Cascade crest, again especially north of I-90.  The further you travel east from the crest, the drier, clearer, and milder it is, thanks to strong W winds and downsloping. South of the Columbia River Gorge, conditions are even drier with mostly clear conditions expected. The highest peaks, except in the north Cascades, will generally be above the cloud tops. By Friday, low clouds will still be present but will begin to recede, and persistent showers near the Canadian border should start to taper in the afternoon.

A slow warming trend will take place over this time, with Mt Hood on the southern edge of a tight gradient, and seeing the most warming as freezing levels rise to 8000-9000' by Friday.  The Olympics and WA Cascades will see a much slower warming trend.

Finally the winds, leaving perhaps the most impactful piece to the end.  Westerly winds will be ripping through this period.  A strong jet core is set up over B.C. will spill those strong winds southward over WA throughout the short term. Look for strong W winds in all areas, strongest near and east of the Cascade crest and at upper elevations where periods of extreme winds are possible.

Extended Weather Synopsis

The upper trough begins to loosen its grip over the area as the PNW sits between weather systems over the weekend.  The other feature, a cut-off area of low-pressure off the California coast, may spread high clouds over Mt Hood and perhaps the South WA Cascades at times.  Temperatures will generally rise over this period, with freezing levels sitting above most popular trailheads and ski area bases.

Previous forecast from Feb 25, 2026

The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.

The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.

The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.

*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.

Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.

The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.

Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.

Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).

The label LT, is shorthand for ‘less than’.
