Weather Synopsis

Our active weather pattern continues! Plenty of moisture, cool temperatures, and gusty winds rang out several inches of snow across the mountains today. While the main event may be winding down for most locations, the good news is additional rounds of snow are on the way.

The front associated with today's storm has already started to sag south this afternoon. This focuses the bulk of the precipitation along a narrow W-E band situated near the WA/OR border. For most of the forecast region, showers should taper this evening as winds die down, and you see a relative break in the action overnight. That won't be the case in the southern forecast zones. Mt Hood, Mt Saint Helens, and Mt Adams could see very stormy conditions with periods of heavy snow and strong and gusty winds. Overall, the main precipitation appears to stay near and south of Hwy 12.

However, weather models continue to disagree about the position of the primary moisture band. This has a big impact on the forecast because it creates a stark difference in temperature and precipitation north and south of the line. This uncertainty ripples forward into Tuesday. Areas that see the most precipitation overnight also experience a better chance for showers Tuesday morning. The farther north this feature drifts, the warmer the conditions could get, and the higher the snow levels rise.

The jet stream to our north pinches down on what's left of our off shore low pressure Tuesday afternoon and evening, eventually cutting it off. This should combine moisture from Canada with our front along the Columbia River Gorge and develop showers in the west slopes of the Cascades. Northwestly winds also help usher in colder air and cause snow levels to drop. On Wednesday, showers slowly fizzle, lingering the longest in the central and northern Cascades.

Extended Weather Synopsis

With the jet stream just across the border into Canada, near constant northwesterly winds aloft should keep the weather unsettled, cool, and damp for the rest of the week. There doesn't seem to be any major storms on our horizon in this time period, but showers may spill over from systems impacting central British Columbia. Not surprisingly, with this pattern, the chance of precipitation increases the further north you are in the region. Conversely, areas down south have a much better chance of seeing sunshine. Even though it's tough to nail down specifics, this pattern seems to hang with us through the end of the month.

Previous forecast from Feb 23, 2026

The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.

The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.

The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.

*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.

Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.

The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.

Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.

Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).

The label LT, is shorthand for ‘less than’.
