Weather Synopsis

Snow is falling across most of our forecast region this afternoon. While it may not be a huge storm, a few inches of fresh snow certainly is nice. A low pressure system rotating off the coast will keep snow in the forecast and conditions windy for the next few days.

Showers should quickly taper from south to north this evening as today's warm front shifts into Canada. However, winds continue to howl, especially along the Cascade Crest and through the mountain Passes. While the western forecast zones dry out overnight, light upslope snow showers develop along the east side of the Cascades. Local terrain can have a strong influence on these events. So, it's hard to pin down exactly where and how much snow will fall, but typically showers are heavier in the eastern parts of these zones.

On Sunday, the low pressure system lifts another front into the area. With the jet stream centered overhead, we should see slightly more moisture and warming temperatures. Expect precipitation to be heaviest in the southern Olympics and near the volcanoes. Easterly winds eventually turn more southerly and southwesterly in the afternoon. Showers once again taper in the evening, but the storm train isn't done yet.

Yet another system arrives in the early morning hours on Monday. This storm is better organized and supported by stronger SW winds, helping provide plentiful moisture, significant orographics, and the ability to carry precipitation east of the crest. The downside... temperatures continue to warm slightly. Right now, the bulk of the precipitation appears to focus on the West South zone. While there's less moisture further north, temperatures stay cooler. On the southern side of the main storm axis, temperatures near Mt Hood could warm more significantly. With gusty SW winds, Monday could be a stormy day across much of the forecast region.

Extended Weather Synopsis

Wet and windy conditions persist into the early part of the week. Monday's storm sags into Oregon in the evening with showers tapering from north to south. This sets up Tuesday to be a relative break for many locations, with showers lingering in the southern Cascades. The parent low pressure system off the coast, continues to weaken and looses its grip in the PNW. This opens the door for a short wave system Tuesday night. While the snow totals from this storm don't look very impressive, it should draw in colder air and help snowlevels once again drop. Showers may linger along the west slopes of the Cascades on Wednesday, but the overall trend will be for drying.

Previous forecast from Feb 21, 2026

The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.

The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.

The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.

*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.

Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.

The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.

Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.

Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).

The label LT, is shorthand for ‘less than’.
