Weather Synopsis

Isolated showers south of I-90 will continue through this evening with clear conditions for areas north of an abrupt cloud shield. A complicated forecast scenario emerges tonight into Monday as a cold maritime upper level trough digs southward along the Canadian west coast. The weather feature merges with an upper low off the California coast, and begins an elongated SW to NE band of precipitation (deformation band) late tonight near Mt Hood, that extends into eastern Washington/Idaho during the day on Monday.  How close to the east slopes of the Cascades this precipitation band forms is debatable. Consensus solutions clip the south Washington Cascades near White Pass and northeastard to Mission Ridge with a 1-3" of snow above 3000-3500'.  Roughly double that is possible for the Mt Hood area. When that feature finally pushes east, the aforementioned cold upper level trough will move into the Olympics by mid-day and eventually the west slopes of the Washington Cascades, likely during the afternoon hours.  The timing of this evolution is up in the air, but once the showers from the NW move inland, much colder air will begin to filter in aloft.

From Monday night through Tuesday, look for a cold upper-level trough parked offshore, spinning bands of showers over the region in S-SW flow aloft. Snow levels will be quite low, so even the measly precipitation forecasts can produce a quick 1-3" of snow every 12 hours. The Olympics usually do well in this pattern, squeezing even more snow out of the weather pattern.  The air mass will be cold and convective on Tuesday, meaning short bursts of heavier precipitation and graupel are possible during more intense showers.

Extended Weather Synopsis

That cold, showery pattern will continue through at least Wednesday, and we may start to see a brief period of modified arctic air seep into the Fraser Valley and parts of eastern Washington with light northerly offshore flow. Snow levels will dance near sea-level Tuesday night through at least Wednesday night on both sides of the Cascades.  The pattern may shift to a more active one either Thursday or Friday, or showers may become lighter and more isolated as the upper low pulls further offshore.

Previous forecast from Feb 15, 2026

The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.

The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.

The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.

*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.

Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.

The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.

Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.

Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).

The label LT, is shorthand for ‘less than’.
