Weather Synopsis

It's a warm, wet, and windy day across much of the forecast region. A frontal system will continue to bring rain and high elevation snow to the Pacific Northwest this afternoon and evening. You may encounter periods of heavy precipitation and gusty winds. The storm peaks in the evening, before quickly exiting to the south and east. By Sunday morning, all the lingering showers should be wrapped up, except for areas along the Columbia River like Mt Hood and Mt Saint Helens.

While it seems fairly certain that most locations in Washington start Sunday dry, after that, all bets are off. A short wave feature tries to lift precipitation northward out of Oregon, but weather models don't agree on how far into the Cascades it reaches or how much moisture it brings. Some show isolated showers all the way to the Canadian border, while others keep nearly the whole state dry. Not surprisingly, there's low confidence in exactly how this will play out. Even still, a few trends emerge. The best chance for precipitation will be from about I-90 southward. The further south, the more likely you'll see rain and snow. Precipitation should be about equal on both sides of the Cascade crest. Locations further north and west could see significant sun breaks. And the winds should generally be light. This pattern (and problem) continues Sunday night.

A low pressure system passing to our north spins a wave of moisture into the Pacific Northwest on Monday. Even though it doesn't appear like a lot of moisture is associated with this feature, colder air should allow for snow to accumulate near and below pass elevations. Moderate westerly winds help showers continue to wring out a few more inches of snow, mainly near and west of the Cascade Crest, through the day.

Extended Weather Synopsis

Even as a few showers linger in the Cascades Monday evening, the overall trend will be for drying and clearing. A split jet stream on Tuesday could result in some low clouds and fog in the mountain valleys and passes to start the day. Passing bands of high clouds will then probably prevent the mountains from turning fully bluebird. A transient high pressure ridge, keeps the dry and mostly clear weather rolling Tuesday night into Wednesday. Don't fret, this doesn't look like the persistent strong ridges we've seen for most of January and early February. This feature should quickly pass us by and keep the door open for additional storms later in the week.

Previous forecast from Feb 7, 2026

The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.

The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.

The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.

*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.

Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.

The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.

Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.

Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).

The label LT, is shorthand for ‘less than’.
