While high pressure will dominate our weather for the next few days, it's not without a few twists and turns on our way to sunshine and unseasonably balmy February temperatures. A weather system aimed into British Columbia will pass to our north tonight. This will bring ample cloud cover and overcast conditions to the central and northern Cascades. It will also bring a chance of rain or high elevation snow to the Olympics and the north Cascades, as well as windy conditions.
The low clouds and fog along the eastern slopes of the Cascades and in the Cascade Passes should be beaten back with a push of westerly winds tonight, also a byproduct of the system passing to our north. Offshore flow/easterly Pass level winds will continue on Wednesday, so it's not entirely clear if we'll be done with the low clouds despite drier air moving in aloft. If low clouds do return, they should less extensive and thinner than today. Outside of the low cloud caveat, all areas can expect clearing skies Wednesday afternoon with some filtered sunshine lingering for the northern half. Freezing levels will bump up to 10,500-12,500' and 5000' temperatures should hit north of 50F along the west slopes of the Cascades, Mt Hood and Olymipcs, and in the mid to upper 40s along the east slopes of the Cascades.
Look for clear nights and sunny days outside some low-level Passes and valley fog on Wednesday night and Thursday. Temperatures and freezing levels will be slightly warmer, with more pronounced inversions (colder air trapped at the lowest elevations).

Extended Weather Synopsis
Thursday night will be mostly clear and mild. The upper level ridge will begin to break down on Friday, with perhaps some cloud cover moving in and freezing levels slowly but surely falling through Friday afternoon. Forecast models differ when storms start to roll through, but precipitation could arrive as early as Friday night or wait until later in the weekend. The first round of precipitation is likely to be on the warmer side.
The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.
The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.
The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.
*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.
Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.
The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.
Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.
Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).
