Weather Synopsis

Dry January is officially over, weather-wise, as a warm frontal system pushes inland this afternoon. Light to moderate rain and snow will continue overnight through Thursday morning, with precipitation tapering off in the afternoon. Snow levels have already risen with this second round, leading to some "hot snow" with temperatures near or above freezing at many trailheads and ski area bases.  Snow levels will hover between 4000-5000' through tomorrow morning, (slightly cooler for the East North and Methow Valley), meaning you'll have to travel to mid to upper elevations to see the new snow stack up, and even then it will be on the wetter side.

The West North and West Central, including the Mt Baker and Mt Loop area, respectively, will see the steadiest and heaviest precipitation through Thursday with ~1.5" of water over 24 hrs. Areas further south, and especially along the east slopes of the Cascades and for Mt Hood, will likely see much lower amounts. Winds will be moderate to locally strong, out of the S-SW with this storm. The freezing rain threat for tonight near Snoqualmie Pass and along portions of the east slopes seems unlikely and if does occur, spotty. As heavier precipitation winds down Thursday afternoon, not only will freezing levels rise again, but we could see some drizzle, mist and low clouds linger behind the main storm.

In a familiar refrain, the next round of warm frontal precipitation will return Thursday night, and largely clip the Olympics and northwest Cascades. On Friday, the warm front will lift north in the morning. We'll be mild, mostly cloudy and dry in the morning while we wait for the cold front to move into the area in the afternoon. Snow levels will be in the 5000-6000' by this point.

Extended Weather Synopsis

Precipitation should taper off Friday night and we'll be left with mild and likely dry conditions on Saturday with freezing levels between 6000-8000'. An upper level ridge will have amplified over the inland NW, but it's unclear how much cloud cover might slip into the region on Saturday.  Areas south of I-90 into Oregon are more likely to see more sun than clouds on Saturday.  We'll get a frontal system some time Sunday, but once again snow levels will be warmer than we'd like, with snow levels only coming down into the mid-elevations.

Previous forecast from Jan 28, 2026

The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.

The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.

The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.

*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.

Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.

The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.

Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.

Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).

The label LT, is shorthand for ‘less than’.
