Weather Synopsis

The last week of cold, snowy weather quickly as temperatures moderated dramatically over the last 24 hours. Temperatures are rising into the upper 20s and 30s at many NWAC stations, with high clouds moving in ahead of the next warm, wet series of systems.

High pressure keeps conditions mostly dry through Friday night, while freezing levels rise to around 3500–4500 ft in the Washington Cascades and into the upper elevations at Mt Hood. SSW winds ramp up late Friday night and continue to increase until precipitation begins over the Olympics and the Mt. Baker area midday Saturday. These winds could be strong at times in areas favored by this wind direction. Although freezing levels will be above 5000 ft in most areas, expect the atmosphere to cool as it saturates and snow levels to start near 3500 ft before rising. Elsewhere, expect thickening clouds and temperatures in the mid-30s to low-40s at 5000 ft.

Precipitation increases and expands southward Saturday night and Sunday, remaining more focused on northwest Washington as a warm front lifts northward and snow levels climb into the middle elevations. Models indicate a sharp boundary forming between mild and wet conditions to the north and west, and warm, cloudy, and dry conditions to the south and east. This boundary is likely to set up somewhere in the central Washington Cascades to Mt Rainier.

Extended Weather Synopsis

The peak of the weak atmospheric river impacts the region Sunday night into Monday, bringing moderate to heavy precipitation and snow levels rising into upper elevations. Monday night into Tuesday, precipitation tapers from south to north as the frontal boundary lifts northward, giving way to warm, dry high pressure, with freezing levels rising to 8,500-12,500 ft.

Previous forecast from Jan 9, 2026

The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.

The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.

The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.

*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.

Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.

The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.

Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.

Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).

The label LT, is shorthand for ‘less than’.
