Weather Synopsis

The cold, snowy pattern continues through Wednesday, then shifts toward milder, less stormy conditions as we approach the weekend.

The advertised narrow band of precipitation associated with a comma-shaped frontal system is moving through the Cascades early Wednesday afternoon. The brief shift to SSW winds was less favorable for mountain enhancement and reduced snowfall rates in many areas. However, another slew of vigorous showers can be seen on radar and satellite imagery that will move into the Cascades during the late afternoon hours as winds shift more westerly. These winds will be strongest on Wednesday night and peak on Thursday as a trough moves over the region, a ridge builds offshore, and atmospheric pressure gradients tighten. The cooler air aloft, moderate to strong W ridgeline winds, and instability showers will produce low-density snowfall throughout the region. With a lot of low-density snow already on the ground, expect significant snow transport in exposed terrain through Thursday. Temperatures should reach their minimum for the week on Thursday morning, before beginning a gradual moderating trend.

Some convergence off Vancouver Island is also expected to increase snowfall in the southern Mountain Loop and Stevens Pass areas late Wednesday night into Thursday, but it is likely to be a diffuse, weak enhancement.

NW flow aloft continues as the ridge of high pressure progresses toward the Pacific Northwest Thursday night and Friday. Snow showers gradually taper and then end from S to N on Friday. While we expect the end of the snowfall to bring snow levels down to 3000-3500 ft, freezing levels will climb to 5500-6000 ft with increasing sunshine near Mt Hood. In short, by Friday afternoon, the cold, snowy pattern enters the rearview mirror.

Extended Weather Synopsis

Friday night and Saturday, the ridge of high pressure centers on the Pacific Northwest. The strong W winds from earlier in the week didn't leave much of a cold pool, but expect somewhat cooler temperatures nonetheless east of the Cascade Crest, while freezing levels climb to 7000-9000 ft. There's a fair amount of uncertainty regarding the timing of precipitation later in the weekend, but a warmer, wetter system is likely to arrive by Sunday or Monday with SW winds.

Previous forecast from Jan 7, 2026

The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.

The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.

The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.

*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.

Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.

The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.

Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.

Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).

The label LT, is shorthand for ‘less than’.
