We'll run back a familiar pattern that's been with us since Thursday, impulses of precipitation and bursts of moderate to locally strong southerly winds, will continue Saturday night, and again Sunday morning, before the precipitation becomes more showery Sunday afternoon. Snow levels and precipitation types in southerly flow aloft remain difficult to pin down.
Milder snow levels 4500-5000' will be found west of the Cascade Crest and Olympics. The coldest of air along the east slopes of the Cascades has long been scoured out, but there's just enough easterly flow to make the Passes tricky. For White and Snoqualmie Passes, periods of light precipitation tonight may take the form of light rain, snow, or freezing rain at Pass level. Stevens is more likely to stay light snow. Along the east slopes of the Cascades, snow levels will generally run 2000-4000' (milder south of I-90), with pockets of freezing rain that may occur along lower slopes and valleys. The heaviest precipitation tonight is likely to occur near the southern volcanoes (Mt St Helens, Adams, and Mt Hood).
Another upper level shortwave moves through Sunday morning, and this one should bring a more widespread and organized period of moderate precipitation across the region. The Passes are more likely to see all snow during this stretch.
We'll be in a showery pattern with generally lighter precipitation rates and breezy W-SW winds Sunday afternoon as snow levels settle between 3500-4000'.

Extended Weather Synopsis
A return to winter-conditions isn't far off! The last wave from the offshore upper trough that's been plaguing us will move through Sunday night, perhaps bringing locally moderate snowfall to the Mt Baker area and the Olympics. Light showers will continue on Monday with snow levels between 2500-3500'. A pair of frontal systems arriving in W-NW flow should deliver a copious amount of snowfall to our mountains between Tuesday and Thursday with low snow levels. An initial look suggests we could see 1-3ft over this time.
The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.
The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.
The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.
*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.
Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.
The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.
Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.
Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).
