It's stormy across the mountains this afternoon as the last in an impressively long (3 weeks) stretch of active weather finally draws to a close. A short wave system will continue to bring snow and gusty winds to the area this evening. Unfortunately, only a few showers will make it over the Cascade crest. Steady snow will turn more showery overnight, with the exception of under a Puget Sound Convergence Zone. This narrow stream of locally heavier precipitation seems to aim between Hwy 2 and I-90, likely having the greatest impact on areas near Salmon la Sac and possibly the upper Icicle Canyon. However, small shifts in its location could drastically change where this extra shot of snow falls.
Many locations will start Saturday cloudy. There's even a chance for showers, especially near what's left of the convergence zone, in the southern Cascades, and near Mt Hood. However, a high pressure ridge building offshore will usher in a well deserved break in the precipitation. Look for sunshine and clearing first in the Olympics, near the Canadian border, and areas further east. Blue sky could slowly spread south in the Cascades by the afternoon. Don't be surprised if low clouds cling to the passes and valleys, even as it's clear above. Saturday will also bring us some of the coldest temperatures of the season. Areas in the Methow region could easily dip into the single digits.
Light winds, mostly clear skies, and cold temperatures should help low clouds and valley fog develop Saturday night. Without much wind to help mix them out, these clouds could persist for much of Sunday morning. After a frigid start to the day, temperatures will slowly climb. Freezing levels could get a bit messy as warmer air pushes in to the area at higher elevaitons capping the cold dense air near the surface. Significant temperature inversions and maybe even multiple freezing levels could be the norm.

Extended Weather Synopsis
A high pressure ridge continues to keep us dry for the extended forecast period. Two main issues to watch. Mostly clear skies at night could allow for low clouds and valley fog to form, along with temperature inversions to develop. So, it might seem dreary and cold at the trailhead first thing in the morning, but higher up, sunshine and warmer temperatures could make it downright pleasant. The other factor is generally high clouds passing over the region. With the jet stream focused to our north, this will be more common near the Canadian border, with sunshine dominating further south. Enjoy the sunshine while you can. The ridge appears to break down mid next week.
The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.
The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.
The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.
*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.
Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.
The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.
Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.
Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).
