While the current weather system hasn't brought the extreme winds some earlier forecasts suggested, expect moderate to strong S-SW winds over the next few hours as the weakening surface low moves north of the border. Snow levels will have peaked in the 5000-5500' range earlier this afternoon and begin to fall to 3500-4500' late afternoon/early evening. Unfortunately, showers will rapidly taper off this evening as upper-level ridging temporarily builds over the area. The dry weather won't last long as an upper low sends another wave of precipitation our way on Christmas. However, this won't feel much like a gift for winter recreation, with generally light precipitation and freezing/snow levels higher than we'd typically expect for winter.
Light precipitation will work its way from Mt Hood Thursday morning and expand northward across both sides of the WA Cascades during the day. There will be a brief bout of E-SE winds morning, but lower max speeds than on Wednesday. The W-E axis of precipitation will hang around the north Cascades Christmas afternoon. We may see showers linger well into Thursday night along that boundary, producing a few more inches of snow, particularly for the Baker area.
A pattern change will start later Thursday night as a cool upper level trough migrates southward and pushes an upper trough through on Friday. Snow levels will fall to their coolest levels since earlier in the week (2500-3500'), and we'll see modest snow accumulation begin for the west slopes of the Cascades and Passes. Westerly winds should become strong by the end of the day in this pattern.

Extended Weather Synopsis
A convergence zone is likely to form Friday afternoon or evening, and snow levels will continue to fall with snow showers continuing overnight. The snow will taper off Saturday morning, and we're likely to see some of the coldest temperatures we've seen in quite some time across the mountains. A broad ridge offshore will lead to dry weather on Sunday, keeping an atmospheric river pointed well to our north as freezing levels slowly rise over the PNW. It remains to be seen how much cloud cover slips under the ridge for Sunday.
The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.
The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.
The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.
*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.
Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.
The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.
Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.
Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).
