A frontal system is slowly making its way onshore this afternoon with moderate snow and winds over the Olympics. This front will steadily march inland, bringing several hours of moderate precipitation to most areas, with showers then quickly tapering off before sunrise. The Mt Baker area looks poised to pick up the most snowfall overnight, in the 10-12" range, thanks in part to strong SSW flow, with other areas picking up 2-8". Strong southerly winds in many areas will also fall off later tonight.
Tuesday will be a transition day with perhaps a few showers lingering in the morning hours, and otherwise a lull between weather systems. A warm front coming up from the south will spread extensive mid/high clouds over most of the area during the day. The Olympics and northwest Cascades may be on the edge of the cloud cover and see sunbreaks for the better part of the day. S-SE ridgeline winds will creep up in the afternoon as easterly offshore graidents begin to increase.
Tuesday night, light warm frontal precipitation will begin to work from south to north over the area, and linger over the north Cascades on Wednesday. There's considerable uncertainty regarding the track of the low-pressure system, but the favored solution(s) bring the low north along the OR/WA coast on Wednesday as it tracks north. S-SE winds should become strong Tuesday night, and areas west of the Cascade crest, plus the Olympics, could see extreme winds Wednesday afternoon. The warm front will bring a decent shot of snow initially to the east slopes of the Cascades Tuesday night and lighter snow elsewhere. However, this system could end with a thud, with a warming trend leading to some light rain or drizzle into mid-elevations Wednesday.

Extended Weather Synopsis
Snow levels will see-saw as they dip lower on Wednesday night, only to have a weaker but likely milder warm front follow a similar south to north track on Christmas Day. A cold front should finally sweep through on Friday, bringing a return to cooler weather and snow back to Pass levels and ski area bases.
The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.
The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.
The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.
*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.
Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.
The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.
Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.
Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).
