Snow showers will continue this afternoon and evening, adding a few inches of snow mainly along the west slopes of the Cascades and Passes. The extreme westerly winds from this morning have tapered down, and will further ease tonight. However, there will be no break in the action. A juicy frontal system will combine with a cool upper-level trough in the NE Pacific to bring renewed precipitation on Thursday.
All areas will see significant rain and snow, but the heaviest precipitation will develop in the morning over the Mt Hood area along a warm frontal boundary and move northward and inland during the day. The southern volcanoes in our forecast area (Mt Hood, St Helens and Mt Adams) should see 2-3" of water today, and again Wednesday night. Strong WSW flow will pump milder air into the southwest WA Cascades and Mt Hood, turning snow back to rain at lower and mid-elevations. With cool easterly flow, Snoqualmie Pass has a good chance of a few hours of freezing rain mid to late afternoon, before the snow level rises well above Pass level in the early evening. The warm air should eventually push 5-6000' snow levels as far north Lake Chelan along the east-side Thursday evening. The north Cascades have the best chance of keeping the snow levels near or below 4000' for the entirety of the storm. Extreme winds will also rake the areas with the highest precipitation forecasts through Thursday night.
On Friday, we'll be left in a cool snow showery pattern and be back to stacking up several inches of fresh snow.

Extended Weather Synopsis
A cooler pattern will deliver snow in the form of showers Friday night through Saturday night. We shouldn't see any eye-popping numbers, but the snow will slowly but steadily stack up at lower and mid-elevations. The highest snow totals will be found along the west slopes of the Cascades, Passes and Mt Hood. On Sunday, we may see lighter showers or a new, stronger frontal system push in.
The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.
The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.
The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.
*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.
Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.
The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.
Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.
Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).
