An atmospheric river is steering moisture and rising snow levels into our region this afternoon. Stormy conditions will intensify as a strong cold front approaches and sweeps from NW to SE across the area tonight, bringing heavy precipitation and strong winds across the mountains. Temperatures will remain mild through the evening and then snow levels will drop rapidly after the cold front sweeps through the Cascades in the 1-2am window.
We'll be left in post-frontal westerly flow on Wednesday, with snow (finally!) showing up at lower elevations (2-3000') and stacking up throughout the day. Snow totals through Wednesday afternoon should range from 6-18". The west slopes of the Cascades, the Passes (above 4000'), and areas near the Cascade crest are the most likely places to see a foot or more of new snow. Westerly winds will be so strong that a clean convergence zone may be hard to discern on radar, but there may be stretches of E-W convergence bands in the Mt Loop and Stevens vicinity, particularly through mid-day Wednesday. Extreme winds will be a theme this afternoon and tonight just about everywhere. Ferocious westerly winds will not let up on Wednesday, at least not immediately, and strong downslope winds will pepper not just the mountains but also ares along the eastern slopes of the Cascades during the day. Both showers and winds will taper slowly later in the day.
Showers should be lighter on Wednesday night as a new Pacific frontal system approaches. The heaviest precipitation and winds will push into the Mt Hood area early Thursday, and lighter but still significant precipitation will spread northward as an occluded front approaches the WA Cascades Thursday afternoon. There will be some warming with this system, but outside of Mt Hood, it's unclear how much snow levels jump over the Cascades Thursday afternoon and evening.

Extended Weather Synopsis
The frontal system will deliver heavy precipitation to the south WA Cascades and Mt Hood Thursday night as well, and snow levels will fall overnight. We'll be in cool westerly flow Friday and Saturday with a broad upper level trough offshore. Snow levels will stick below Pass levels and ski area bases as snow showers continue to accumulate several inches of fresh snow each day.
The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.
The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.
The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.
*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.
Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.
The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.
Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.
Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).
