Moderate to heavy showers will continue to pepper the mountains this afternoon and evening before becoming lighter overnight. Snow levels will fall to 3500-4000' over the north and central Cascades 5000-6000' for the south Cascades and Mt Hood. There will be a convergence area that adds a few additional inches to the Cascades in Whatcom and Skagit counties tonight as well. While snow at elevations that are currently bare will be welcome, the main story will be the ongoing extreme W-SW winds. With saturated soils and many fallen trees over the past week, these high winds will batter all ridgelines and the east slopes of the Cascades in general for the better part of Monday night. Refer to our friends at the NWS for statements on flooding and landslides.
We'll barely catch our brief Tuesday morning before the next pulse of warm frontal precipitation in a long drawn out atmospheric river event moves over the area. The heavist precipitation will likely center on the central and northern WA Cascades during the day. Winter will be short-lived as this pulse of moisture brings milder air with it, pushing snow levels back up above ski area bases and the major Passes during the day.
A strong front will smash through the area Tuesday night, with another round of extreme winds and heavy precipitation. Snow levels will start high and cool significantly late Tuesday night into Wednesday morning following the frontal passage. We'll be in cool WNW flow on Wednesday with some of the lowest snow levels we've seen in some time, and consistent moderate snow showers to help build our snowpack.

Extended Weather Synopsis
The jet stream temporarily drops south on Wednesday and Thursday, delivering heavy precipitation into Oregon and the Mt Hood area. A weather system on Thursday may bring a brief warm-up to portions of the south and even central WA Cascades during the day on Thursday. It looks like we'll be back into good snow production pattern Thursday night through Friday with a cool trough set up offshore and WNW flow aloft. The west slopes of the Cascades and Passes would be the primary snow beneficiary during this pattern of snow base building.
The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.
The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.
The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.
*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.
Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.
The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.
Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.
Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).
