The December subtropical connection is in its final days, but it won't quit without more significant rainfall and another atmospheric river.
Saturday evening, high clouds spread into the region with a narrow band of briefly moderate rainfall moving into the region overnight. This band reaches Hurricane Ridge around 10PM, Mt Baker by around midnight, and Snoqualmie Pass around 4 AM. The rain band peters out as it moves SE through the morning hours, barely reaching Mt. Hood in the afternoon. A convergence could develop over the northern Cascades or the Mountain Loop as the day progresses, keeping precipitation in the forecast up north. Snow levels hover around 6000-7000 ft, with limited cooling behind the front as an atmospheric river approaches our offshore waters. Mt Baker gets the most of the unwanted water (around 0.7"), with other areas receiving around 0.25" or less.
The main atmospheric river approaches as a low moves toward Heida Guaii, spreading a wide swath of moisture-laden air directly toward Washington State on a brisk SSW flow. This is a different flow pattern than the previous atmospheric river so that Mt Baker will be more favored. However, weak E flow should help wring out the moisture on the E slopes of the Cascades as well. Expect moderate to strong winds and heavy precipitation for many areas from late Sunday night through Monday, with the trailing cold front reaching the coastline during the afternoon.

Extended Weather Synopsis
The trailing cold front cuts off the heaviest precipitation and brings in cooling on Monday evening. Winds shift WSW and could be strong on the E slopes of the Cascades overnight. Snow levels lower to 3500-5500 ft by Tuesday, bringing accumulations to some higher Cascade passes and ski area bases. Precipitation intensifies Tuesday afternoon and peaks Tuesday evening ahead of another cold front. This cold front will bring in a much stronger push of cold air, bringing heavy snowfall above 3500-4500 ft, late Tuesday night, and moderate to heavy snow showers with 2000-3000 ft snow levels on Wednesday. A taste of winter at long last!
The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.
The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.
The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.
*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.
Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.
The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.
Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.
Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).
