Weather Synopsis

We are leaning into April showers...a wet, windy and showery pattern will continue from this afternoon through Tuesday night. An upper level disturbance has spawned an array of showers this afternoon that's traversing across the area from the SW to NE. Moderate to heavy showers will continue through this evening before starting to taper later tonight as snow levels lower to 3500' before daybreak. Moderate to strong SW winds will continue overnight as well. The heaviest snow showers will focus on West North/Central tonight.

We'll get a relative break tomorrow morning, but the same deep NE Pacific trough will send a new frontal system through the area Tuesday afternoon. As the low-pressure center curls over the NW tip of the Olympic Peninsula in the afternoon, the associated cold front will bring renewed, heavier precipitation to the area along with another round of strong SW winds. Snow levels will be slightly lower on Tuesday, hanging in the 4000-5000' during the day. The volcanoes, Mt Baker, Mt Rainier, and St Helens, stand to pick up the most snow tonight through Tuesday afternoon, with storm totals generally 5-10", except 12-20" on the WA volcanoes.

Showers will taper Tuesday evening, but a Puget Sound Convergence Zone will likely deliver some extra accumulations for West Central and West North once again. An upper level ridge will build over the area on Wednesday. Look for more clouds and the odd leftover shower near the Canadian border and west of the crest, with warmer and clearer conditions further east and south. Freezing levels will try to pop up to 7000' near Mt Hood, and 5000' near Mt Baker on Wednesday.

Extended Weather Synopsis

The upper level ridge will build and shift inland over the intermountain West Wednesday night and Thursday. Freezing level will soar to 8,000-9,000'+ through midday Thursday as an approaching frontal system approaches the coast. The frontal system may push inland Thursday afternoon with a quick round of precipitation and wind or may hold off until Thursday night.  The front will past through Thursday night and cooler conditions will prevail on Friday.  Look for low clouds and a few showers near and especially west of the Cascade crest and drier and sunnier conditions further east and for Mt Hood.

Previous forecast from Apr 7, 2025

The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.

The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.

The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.

*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.

Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.

The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.

Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.

Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).

The label LT, is shorthand for ‘less than’.
