Warm temperatures and high freezing levels from this afternoon won't cool much overnight as a slow-moving frontal system approaches the coast. The Pacific frontal system will stumble inland to the Olympic Peninsula before daybreak Sunday, but with upper-level ridging amplifying over the intermountain West, the front will have a difficult time making headway further inland on Sunday.
There is still a range of outcomes regarding the eastern extent of the precipitation on Sunday, with the best consensus pointing to partly sunny/filtered sun for the west slopes of the Cascades and Mt Hood in the morning, giving way to overcast skies and light precipitation in the afternoon, with precipitation rates approaching moderate for the west slope volcanoes in the afternoon. Light precipitation may not make it east of the Cascade crest by 5pm Sunday and eastern spots will likely see more sun during the day. There's better confidence S-SE winds will increase on Sunday, becoming strong for the Hurricane Ridge and Mt Baker area later in the day. Once precipitation does begin, snow levels will be well above Pass level and higher trailheads.
The front will slowly slide inland Sunday night, spreading precipitation further east. SSW flow aloft will likely favor the volcanoes for the heaviest precipitation amounts. Snow levels will slowly fall to 5000-5500' by Monday morning as cooler air seeps into the region. On Monday, look for unsettled showery weather as an upper level feature rotating around the base of a broad trough of low pressure in the Gulf of Alaska brings about renewed showers in the afternoon.

Extended Weather Synopsis
Snow levels will dip to 3500' Monday night with continued showers. The same broad trough will spawn a developing low on Tuesday that lifts NE across the region. This should be a fast-mover and bring another round of wind, rain and snow. Showers will continue Tuesday night with weak upper level ridging attempting to build over the area Wednesday afternoon.
The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.
The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.
The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.
*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.
Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.
The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.
Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.
Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).
