Weather Synopsis

The narrowing and weakening band of moisture associated with the atmospheric river gradually lifts northward as a broad west coast ridge expands northward. Moderate rain (and highest-elevation snow) will linger from the mountain loop to the Canadian Border, with light precipitation gradually ending in the central Cascades. With the faucet aimed further north, Washington Pass is the only area on the east slopes likely to produce substantial precipitation. Snow levels rise to 7000-8000 ft as light to moderate W ridgeline winds gradually decrease.

Tuesday may feel more like summer than the 5th day of Spring. 5000 ft temperates start the day around 40F and rise to 45-55F or more by the afternoon. Some low clouds linger early in the day for Mt Baker and the Mountain Loop, but the sunny start in other areas will take over the entire region as the day progresses. Low-level E flow increases as the day progresses.

Clouds will increase over the Olympics late Tuesday night as the next low approaches.

Wednesday will be an atypical day in the Cascade Cool season. Clouds will increase over mountainous terrain in the morning hours. By mid to late morning, expect showers to develop and drift to the west side of the Cascades on SSE flow. This process will increase with widespread showers and isolated potentially strong thunderstorms developing. This could include small hail or damaging winds. It would be a good idea to stay tuned to the forecast as it evolves before venturing into alpine areas during this weather pattern.

Extended Weather Synopsis

The main frontal system moves into the area Wednesday night with moderate rain/snow (possibly thunderstorms early) and decreasing snow levels overnight. The offshore closed low continues to bring rain and snow showers into the region with more seasonable temperatures Thursday through Friday as SSW flow shifts WSW.

Previous forecast from Mar 24, 2025

The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.

The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.

The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.

*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.

Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.

The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.

Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.

Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).

The label LT, is shorthand for ‘less than’.
