A frontal system lifting north this afternoon is bringing a burst of moderate precipitation to many areas. Showers will follow behind this front this evening in southerly flow aloft, initially favoring the higher peaks like the volcanoes and shadowing the Cascade Passes with lighter precipitation. A deep low pressure system offshore will rotate a secondary frontal feature inland after midnight, bringing heavy showers to the Olympics first and then the Cascades before sunrise. Winds will really begin to crank up for areas west of the Cascade crest and for Mt Hood tonight.
Other areas will not be left out of the stormy, showery weather on Tuesday. The low center will push east of the Cascade during the morning with moderate to heavy showers and extreme W-SW winds for the central/south WA Cascades and Mt Hood. Showers will become more scattered in the afternoon, but there's a good chance that a Puget Sound Convergence zone will take shape over the central WA Cascades between Snoqualmie Pass and the Mt Loop Highway. Those strong W winds will allow significant shower activity to slop over the Cascade crest, although the further east you go, the conditions will become drier. Snow levels will bump around 3500-4000' over this period, likely resulting in 1-2' along the west slopes of the Cascades and near the Cascade crest.
Showers should will wind down Tuesday night with high pressure building offshore. Wednesday will be dry and mild. Cool low-level east flow will result in temperature inversions for Stevens Pass and along the east slopes of the Cascades, meaning lower slopes may stay near or below freezing relative to upper slopes.

Extended Weather Synopsis
The upper level ridge of high pressure will briefly weaken Wednesday night as a weak weather system passes to our north. We'll likely see some mid/high clouds for central/north WA Cascades, along with the potential for some light showers on Thursday with drier and clearer conditions further south. The upper level ridge will quickly rebuild on Friday as freezing levels soar to 9000-11000 ft.
The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.
The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.
The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.
*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.
Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.
The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.
Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.
Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).
