An E-W-oriented occluded front continues to rotate slowly northward this afternoon. Light snow over the southern and central WA Cascades will spread north but the band will start to fray and weaken, with only a bit of light snow likely for the North Cascades this evening. This system has featured more impressive E-SE winds than snow. Wind speeds will continue to slowly tail off this afternoon and evening, becoming much lighter after midnight. With current temperatures near the Cascade crest in the single digits and teens, dangerously cold wind chills will continue as well.
The parent low-pressure center off the Oregon coast will drift inland tonight, with a renewed round of light to moderate precipitation for the Mt Hood area and perhaps the far southwest WA Cascades, including Mt St Helens, where another 1-3" is possible Thursday night. Snow should be lighter and less impactful for areas further north.
On Friday, an upper-level trough will pass through the area, keeping light showers/low clouds in the forecast along the west slopes of the Cascades and Mt Hood. The back edge of the trough should maintain cloud cover along the east slopes of the Cascades as well. The switch to westerly, onshore flow will also nudge us out of the freezer. Snow levels will bump up to 1500-2500' and mid-mountain high temperatures will push into the 20s throughout the area. Ridgeline winds will become moderate to locally strong out of the W-NW Friday afternoon.
A few light showers focused mainly along the west slopes of Cacades will continue Friday night along with moderate to strong WNW ridgeline winds. A more organized Pacific frontal system will push closer to the coast on Saturday, with light, warm frontal precipitation pushing over the area in the afternoon. Snow levels will start on the cool-side in the 1000-2000' range.

Extended Weather Synopsis
This doesn't look like a haymaker of a storm, so look for light to moderate precipitation Saturday night followed by post-frontal showers on Sunday. A secondary weather feature should bring renewed and possibly a more moderate round of precipitation Sunday night and Monday. Snow levels will continue to creep up over the latter half of the weekend, and will likely push into the 3000-4000' range by the end of the day Sunday.
The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.
The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.
The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.
*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.
Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.
The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.
Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.
Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).
