Today was the crescendo of our recent dry weather with lighter winds, widespread sunshine (outside of low stratus along the east slopes and Snoqualmie Pass) and mild temperatures. Balmy mountain temperatures are topping out this afternoon in the 40s and low 50s.
Things are about to change as a fast moving cold front descends from British Columbia tonight and flattens the upper level ridge of high pressure that's currently over the western US. Unfortunately this front is moisture-starved and will not bring much new snow to our mountains. We can expect to see 1-2" of snow for west slopes of the Cascades near and north of I-90 and a trace to nada for areas further east and south. There's a chance for some freezing drizzle along the west slopes of the Cascades from about I-90 southward Thursday afternoon and evening. There will be a sharp cooling trend during the day that continues Thursday night.
The westerly winds will be the biggest story with this weather system. Many areas will see strong westerly ridgeline winds develop on Thursday with extreme winds possible along the eastern slopes of the Cascades. Strong ridgeline winds will decrease from north to south Thursday night into Friday morning.
We'll see a few linger showers Thursday evening with low-level clouds sticking around the west slopes of the Cascades through Friday morning. Snow levels will have plummeted to near sea level by this time. Post-frontal showers will short-lived as drier northerly flow aloft clears us out, leaving us with a cold dry end of the work week.

Extended Weather Synopsis
We'll be on the backside of a dominant and broad upper level trough that's situation over the central 2/3rds of the country over the weekend. This will help keep cold temperatures (also known as winter-like temperatures) in place through the weekend even as another strong upper level ridge builds offshore. Weak upper level disturbances will pass over the area at times, causing just enough lift that we may see occasional flurries and bouts of moderate to strong ridgeline winds. Easterly offshore flow will increase towards the end of the weekend allowing for a chilly easterly breeze through the major Cascade Passes by Sunday afternoon or night.
The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.
The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.
The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.
*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.
Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.
The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.
Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.
Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).
