Weather Synopsis

Another day of dry mild weather is in store for us as an upper level ridge continues to dominate our weather pattern. Much like today, we'll see varying amounts of high clouds slip under the ridge tonight with temperatures sticking above freezing with the caveat of low level inversions. The depth of the low level colder air will be a bit deeper along the east slopes of the Cascades with inversions extending up to 5000' north of I-90. Moderate ridgeline winds (locally strong at upper elevations in the alpine) will also continue overnight for the WA Cascades and Olympics with generally lighter winds down near Mt Hood.

As the center of high pressure slides east and closer to our area on Wednesday, we'll see fewer high clouds and even warmer temperatures. Mid-mountain temperatures should be in the 40s with even a few 50s possible. Ridgeline winds will also ease compared to the last few days in this pattern.

A moisture deprived frontal system will flatten the upper level ridge Wednesday night and approach the area on Thursday. The front should sweep through the NW to SE during the day.  We're likely to see a few inches of snow from roughly Snoqualmie Pass and northward over the west slopes of the Cascades. Further south and east the moisture dries up and we should little to no precipitation other than a trace of light snow or even freezing drizzle. This front will feature strong westerly ridgeline winds and snow levels and temperatures will fall throughout the day.

Extended Weather Synopsis

We'll see a few leftover light snow showers Thursday night into Friday morning, mainly along the west slopes of the Cascades. Strong westerly ridgeline winds should decrease during the day on Friday.  The big change will be in the temperature as colder air settles over the area with temperatures feeling downright winter-like. We'll be in northerly flow Friday through the weekend.  We should see an increase in cold offshore easterly winds either later Saturday or Sunday. We may see a few flurries at times but no significant weather is expected.

Previous forecast from Jan 14, 2025

The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.

The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.

The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.

*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.

Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.

The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.

Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.

Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).

The label LT, is shorthand for ‘less than’.
