Weather Synopsis

This week won't feel very much like January. A few very light lingering rain and snow showers are the remnants of dissipating post-frontal flow Sunday evening. Expect a dusting of snow in some areas above the 4000-5000 ft rain/snow line. Meanwhile, a compact surface low associated with a weak open trough fends off the amplifying ridge for the next 24 hours as it reaches the coast during the evening hours. Most models show a compact shield of precipitation impacting areas primarily south of the OR/WA border, but cloud cover will extend north as far as the central Washington Cascades. Since Mt Hood is on the edge of the precipitation shield, it could get anywhere from around 0-.25" of precipitation with a 5000 ft snow line. As the low passes, generally light E or SE ridgeline winds should continue through Monday for Mt Hood.

Skies clear Sunday night through Monday morning from north to south. After a cool start in some valleys east of the Cascade Crest, expect temperatures to rise rapidly as the pronounced ridge moves into our nearshore waters. By Monday night the ridge moves onshore and gradually flattens ahead of a weakening system approaching from the NW Tuesday afternoon. By Monday, freezing levels near and west of the Cascade Crest rise to 6000-8000 ft, and by Tuesday afternoon they rise to 10,000 ft in most areas. Expect low-level inversions to bring below-freezing temperatures and fog to valley locations, particularly east of the Cascade Crest and through the mountain gaps, Monday night and Tuesday morning.

Extended Weather Synopsis

The weak trough glancing northern Washington Tuesday night lowers snow/freezing levels to 5000 ft or so in the north Cascades as some very light rain or snow arrives late Tuesday night into early Wednesday. Most other areas just receive some mixing of the atmosphere (less valley fog). The ridge rebounds strongly Wednesday night and Thursday for more anomalously high freezing levels and valley inversions.

Previous forecast from Jan 5, 2025

The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.

The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.

The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.

*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.

Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.

The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.

Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.

Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).

The label LT, is shorthand for ‘less than’.
