The cold front arriving on the Pacific Northwest coastline early Thursday afternoon is better organized with a low center headed toward the northern tip of Vancouver Island and a juicy band of precipitation currently dousing the Olympic Mountains. This package will lift NE as the front moves through the area through the evening hours. The southern Olympics and Mt Baker areas can expect around 1" or more of rainfall with this feature over a short 6-hour period. Mt Rainier could also squeeze out a fair amount of water. While Washington Pass stays cold enough for a quick 2-5" of snow. Other areas can expect less than 0.1" of water with areas east of the Cascade Crest likely to get a wintry mix as warm air continues to over-ride cold air at the surface. But that cold air will get gradually scoured out and it could change to all rain in some areas.
Shortwave ridging brings the region a mostly dry morning on Friday. Temperatures remain unseasonably mild with freezing levels around 9,000-10,000 ft for the Olympics, Mt Hood, and the southern Washington Cascades. Light rain and highest elevation snow spreads back into the Olympics Friday afternoon as clouds thicken over the Cascades in the afternoon ahead of the next shortwave feature. This feature will be similar to Friday night's, but the bulk of the precipitation will remain further north and west. Expect an uptick in southerly winds Friday afternoon and low-level E winds. Precipitation tapers as the system moves into British Columbia Friday evening.
Ridging takes hold once again Friday night into early Saturday, but a stronger system approaches the coast during the mid-morning hours and spreads moderate rain and higher-elevation snow throughout the region as the day progresses. There is an increased chance of snowfall E of the Cascade Crest and through the mountain gaps, but a wintry mix will feature in many areas. West of the Cascades, snow levels drop late in the day.

Extended Weather Synopsis
Active weather continues with slightly less above-normal temperatures. Onshore flow keeps rain and snow showers going Saturday night. Another system hot on the heels of the previous, brings another round of heavier rain and snow late Sunday, followed by shower activity Sunday night. Expect drier weather with a brief ridge on Monday.
The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.
The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.
The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.
*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.
Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.
The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.
Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.
Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).
