The brunt of the atmospheric river continues Tuesday night into the early morning hours on Wednesday as a strong warm front lifts into northern Washington State, followed by a strong cold front moving through from the W early Wednesday. Snow levels rise to around 7500 ft in most areas (except Washington Pass) as strong SSW winds over-ride cold air in place east of the Cascades with moderate E winds sucking that air through the mountain gaps. But the transition to these elevated snow levels will be particularly messy near and east of the Cascade Crest. A period of heavy freezing rain remains likely during the evening and overnight hours. Snoqualmie Pass likely transitions to freezing rain by 7 PM and Stevens Pass by 10 PM. We don't know whether enough warm air will arrive to displace the cold air at Washington Pass.
The front moves through with strong cooling by 7 AM on Wednesday, cutting off the deluge of moisture. Expect rapid cooling during the morning hours as snow levels drop to around 4000 ft by the afternoon with a push of moderate W winds (potentially locally strong for ridgelines east of the Crest). Light snow showers focus mostly on the northern and central Cascades with convergence likely creating periods of moderate rain and snow for Stevens Pass and the southern mountain loop through the mid-day hours. Expect increasing sun breaks east of the Cascade Crest.
Weak ridging brings dry conditions Wednesday night, but warming associated with an approaching warm front will become evident for Mt Hood and the Olympics.
The warm front brushes NW Washington with light precipitation for the Olympics and N Cascades. Expect a sharp contrast in temperature across the Cascades as E flow keeps the passes and E slopes significantly cooler.

Extended Weather Synopsis
Weak ridging continues across the west coast with systems brushing NW Washington Thursday night and again Friday night. Expect a sharp E-W temperature contrast across the Cascades with much more significantly above normal temperatures west of the Cascade Crest. The ridge breaks down on Saturday with a system moving onshore Saturday afternoon.
The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.
The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.
The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.
*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.
Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.
The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.
Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.
Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).
