Weather Synopsis

A strong winter storm will start to wind down this evening. So far, snowfall totals vary widely with the passes only receiving 4-6 inches, while Mt Hood, Crystal Mt, Mt Rainier, and some of the eastern mountains picked up close to a foot, and Mt Baker topped 18 inches. But, the storm isn't quite done.

Lingering low-level moisture and onshore (west) flow will maintain post frontal showers overnight and into the early morning hours. The heaviest precipitation will be near Mt Baker and Mt Hood, with slightly less snow expected in other locations along the west slopes of the Cascades. A few showers could venture further east, but they should be few and far between. The strong and gusty wind that characterized this storm should also start to ease overnight and allow for at least some clearing east of the Cascade crest.

In general, Sunday should start cloudy across all except the most easter portions of the forecast region. However, the trend will be for drying and some clearing. Sun breaks are expected in all locations, but the greatest clearing should occur further south and east in the range. This pause in the action will be short-lived.

Our next approaching storm quickly shoves the dry high pressure ridge out of the region. High thin clouds out ahead of the storm should arrive in the Olympics and southern Cascades late Sunday afternoon. Precipitation moves inland overnight reaching the Olympics and areas south of I-90 around midnight. Snow continues to spread from S to N with plenty of moisture wrapping around the east side of the mountains. Weather models continue to struggle with the exact timing of this storm. That could greatly affect how much snow falls and when.

Extended Weather Synopsis

The parent low pressure from Monday's storm shifts inland Monday night helping reinvigorate snow showers. While precipitation looks heaviest for the volcanoes, there's enough wrap-around (SE winds) moisture with this system to bring steady light snow to the east slopes of the Cascades. Tuesday night into Wednesday, things get messy. Weather models keep switching the details, but the story remains largely the same. The PNW appears to sit on the backside of a high pressure ridge building over the Intermountain West. This draws much warmer air and moisture up from the SW. Snow levels should climb, and rain could be in store for many of our mountain locations.

Previous forecast from Dec 14, 2024

The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.

The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.

The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.

*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.

Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.

The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.

Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.

Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).

The label LT, is shorthand for ‘less than’.
