Weather Synopsis

The rinse and repeat forecast continues as strong upper level ridging continues to define our weather for a few more days. If you're mired in the low clouds/valley fog, expect these conditions to persist overnight and during the day on Wednesday with low December sun angles and nothing to stir up the lower atmosphere. The stratus is thicker and more extensive on the east side of the Cascades with cloud tops around 4000-4500'.  Low level easterly flow will continue to draw low clouds/fog up to and in some cases through the Cascade Passes. Snoqualmie Pass will likely see low clouds persist at Pass level through the short term while the low clouds should stay just east of Stevens and White Pass.

Above the inversion and clouds, besides unseasonably mild temperatures, it's quite dry making for a stark transition from clouds to clear weather.  Along with the 10,000-11,000 freezing levels, mid-mountain high temperatures will peak once again in the 40s and even low 50s Wednesday afternoon.

The first Pacific frontal system approaches the coast Wednesday night but weakens before it pushes inland as the ridge rebuilds over the inland NW. The forecast for Thursday as trended drier and it's becoming increasingly likely we'll see at most a few spit of light precipitation for the Olympics and west slopes of the Cascades during the day on Thursday along with an increase in mid/high clouds.

Extended Weather Synopsis

The forecast becomes more interesting as we close out the work week and head into the weekend.  Forecast models seem to be coming into alignment with what to do with warm frontal moisture on Friday.  The axis of heaviest precipitation should stay north of the border, perhaps nicking the Olympics and northwest Cascades. While that means a better chance of keeping rain at bay on Friday, we'll be on the warm side of the jet and freezing levels will once again rise to near or above 10,000'.

The cold front will begin to sink south later Friday night into Saturday, making for a stormy day, especially given our recent spell of quiet weather. This storm will likely start out warm with plenty of rain and then cool during the day. How fast mid elevations turn to snow is still in question and will depend on the timing and positioning of the front.

Previous forecast from Dec 3, 2024

The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.

The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.

The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.

*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.

Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.

The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.

Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.

Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).

The label LT, is shorthand for ‘less than’.
