Weather Synopsis

The Forecast Center will be closed on Thu Apr 18th, for a staff meeting. We will not issue a Mountain Weather Forecast on Thursday.

Beautiful spring weather will carry us through the remainder of the work week. You'll find mostly clear skies, generally light winds, and seasonable temperatures.

An exiting trough Wednesday afternoon has just enough atmospheric instability to produce a few popcorn clouds around the region. There's a very slight chance some of these could turn into light showers for areas near and east of the Cascade crest from about I-90 southward. However, any precipitation will be minimal, and most locations, even in these zones, should stay dry. Generally clear skies will allow for a bit of overnight cooling even if freezing levels don't significantly drop.

On Thursday, the Pacific Northwest sits just east of a high pressure ridge in the Pacific. This will bring us cool, dry, northerly flow aloft. Mostly sunny skies will help 5000ft temperatures climb near or just above 40F across the region. Once again, you could encounter small cumulus clouds in the afternoon, but they will be few and far between.

A similar pattern plays out on Thursday night and Friday. Temperatures cool near the surface at night and rebound during the day. Late Friday, a few bands of high clouds could start to push into the Olympics, West South, and Mt Hood zones ahead of our next system. These clouds don't look very thick and shouldn't have a significant impact on daytime warming.

NWAC will issue daily Mountain Weather Forecasts @ 230pm through April 28th.

Extended Weather Synopsis

An elongated trough starts to approach the region on Friday night and Saturday. Clouds and winds will increase ahead of the weak storm. Weather models differ on the exact timing of precipitation, but most locations seem to stay dry until late in the afternoon. Snow levels will fall with the onset of precipitation and should return to near or below Pass elevations by Sunday morning. The storm quickly pushes east and leaves us with clouds and a few spotty showers to wrap up there weekend.

Previous forecast from Apr 16, 2024

The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.

The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.

The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.

*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.

Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.

The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.

Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.

Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).

The label LT, is shorthand for ‘less than’.
