It's a beautiful day across the PNW with mountain temperatures generally in the 30s to 40s across the region. High clouds are beginning to thicken ahead of a Pacific frontal system to our north. That trend will continue overnight with skies becoming overcast in the north and eventually to the south before daybreak. Southerly winds will increase ahead of the frontal system late tonight for the Olympics and northwest Cascades and stick around the moderate range during the day. The frontal band will begin to slow as it approaches due to the parent low pressure system offshore beginning to drop south and away from the PNW. Precipitation will move into the Olympics and northwest Cascades in the morning but have a hard time advancing south of I-90 during the daylight hours. Areas south of the frontal boundary will see another mild with cloud bases slowly lowering along with increasing ridgeline winds in the latter half of the day.
The frontal boundary will weaken and washout out over the Cascades Thursday night with light showers over the area. The upper low will drift closer to the northern CA coast on Friday turning the flow aloft to southerly. This should help maintain extensive cloud cover over the area on Friday and along with a chance of showers. Closer to the low for areas like Mt Hood, there's a better chance of occasionally moderate showers. Despite the unsettled weather, snow levels will be on the milder side in the 5500-6500' range.

Extended Weather Synopsis
We'll dry out as the influence of the upper low wanes and weak ridging builds overhead. We're in for a warm and dry weekend with westerly zonal flow aloft. There will be a north-south distinction as 7500' freezing levels near the Canadian border increase to 10,000' around Mt Hood. Not only will the days be warm the nights will almost as mild. On Sunday, a strong onshore push will try to cool temperatures near and west of the Cascade crest late in the day with westerly ridgeline winds ramping up.
The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.
The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.
The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.
*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.
Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.
The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.
Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.
Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).
