Weather Synopsis

If you're a fan of unseasonably cold temperatures and the potential for several inches of fluffy low-density snow every 12hrs...then this is the forecast for you. A deep upper trough parked off the B.C. coast will slowly drop southward over the next few days and will be the dominant weather feature in our region. Much colder air aloft associated with the upper low will settle over the region with a cold and unstable air mass overhead.

Showers will wax and wane as upper-level shortwaves and day-time heating help to spark and focus shower activity over the next few days. Tonight, the west slopes of the Cascades and Mt Hood will fare better than the east slopes regarding new snow, but on Friday, the flow aloft will turn more southerly helping to spread more snow showers further east. The timing of any particular feature over the next few days will be difficult to pinpoint. The Olympic peninsula which has already been hammered by snow, will continue to receive locally heavier accumulations closer to the low as well as the Mt Hood area closer to the base of the trough.

Periods of moderate SW-S-SE winds will come with the weather impulses with locally strong SW winds down near Mt. Hood.  Snow levels will dip to near sea level at night and rebound to 1000-2000' during the days, with the freezing level roughly 500-1000' higher. As with a showery pattern in March, it won't be all precipitation all the time so expect sunbreaks during the day. Due to the convective nature to the showers, heavier showers are likely to contain graupel.

Extended Weather Synopsis

The long range looks similar to the short range with the potential for even colder temperatures and plenty of snow showers in the forecast.  A more defined frontal system with heavier snow may affect southern areas on Monday, but right now that's far from certain.

Previous forecast from Feb 29, 2024

The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.

The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.

The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.

*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.

Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.

The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.

Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.

Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).

The label LT, is shorthand for ‘less than’.
