Weather Synopsis

A cold trough approaches the Pacific Northwest as it slides down the British Columbia coastline from the NW. A SW-NE-oriented cold front is draped from SW Washington across the central Puget Sound to around Mt Baker as of 2 PM. Moderate to heavy rain and snow pushes to the SE of the front, in a wide swath extending down to Mt Hood. Snow levels remain on the mild side ahead of the front with 3500-4500 ft snow levels in the Washington Cascades and 5500 ft snow levels around Mt Hood.

The front progresses rapidly SE through the evening hours, with plummeting temperatures for the mountains of Washington State as the more continuous precipitation shifts to moderate snow showers and heavier convergence bands focus on the central Washington Cascades. Mt Hood and the southern Washington Volcanoes should also pick up heavy snowfall with around 1" of snow water equivalent expected in the aforementioned areas.

Lighter to moderate snow showers and convergence continue as W winds shift a bit more to the WNW, focusing some of the convergence southward toward Snoqualmie. Snow levels remain below 1000 ft in most areas. Ridgeline winds become mostly light in the north, but remain in the moderate range in the southern half of the forecast region, potentially picking up a bit in the afternoon with a passing disturbance.

NW flow aloft develops Monday night through Tuesday. Mostly light snow showers (moderate in convergence) decrease into Tuesday morning. However, an approaching warm front will bring increasing mostly light, but potentially moderate snow into the region during the afternoon. Snow levels remain below 1000 ft.

Extended Weather Synopsis

A powerful system brings increasing moderate to heavy snowfall Tuesday night, with very heavy rain and snow along with warming temperatures on Wednesday. Snow levels rise to around 3000 ft in the Mt Baker area, 3500 ft in the Snoqualmie Pass area, and 4500 ft in the Mt Hood area. Expect widespread moderate SW ridgeline winds ahead of the system, with a strong cold front dropping temperatures rapidly as it pushes from NW to SE Wednesday night with very heavy snowfall continuing. Expect Moderat snow showers and 1000-2500 ft snow levels on Thursday.

Previous forecast from Feb 25, 2024

The NWAC program is administered by the USDA-Forest Service and operates from the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Seattle. NWAC services are made possible by important collaboration and support from a wide variety of federal, state and private cooperators.

The 5000’ temperature forecast does not imply a trend over the 12 hr period and only represents the max and min temperatures within a 12 hr period in the zone. The 6-hr snow level forecast, the forecast discussion, and weather forecast sections may add detail regarding temperature trends.

The snow level forecast represents the general snow level over a 6 hr time period. Freezing levels are forecast when precipitation is not expected.

*Easterly or offshore flow is highlighted with an asterisk when we expect relatively cool east winds in the major Cascade Passes. Easterly flow will often lead to temperature inversions and is a key variable for forecasting precipitation type in the Cascade Passes. Strong easterly flow events can affect terrain on a more regional scale.

Ridgeline winds are the average wind speed and direction over a 6 hr time period.

The wind forecast represents an elevation range instead of a single elevation slice. The elevation range overlaps with the near and above treeline elevation bands in the avalanche forecast and differs per zone.

Wind direction indicates the direction the wind originates or comes from on the 16-point compass rose.

Water Equivalent (WE) is the liquid water equivalent of all precipitation types; rain, snow, ice pellets, etc., forecast to the hundredth of an inch at specific locations. To use WE as a proxy for snowfall amounts, start with a snow to water ratio of 10:1 (10 inches of snow = 1 inch WE). Temperatures at or near freezing will generally have a lower ratio (heavy wet snow) and very cold temperatures can have a much higher ratio (dry fluffy snow).

The label LT, is shorthand for ‘less than’.
